Capital City Classic 10K 2013

After completing the Little Rock Half Marathon at the beginning of March, I relaxed my running schedule and began incorporating cycling to get ready for the triathlon season which was fast approaching.  Unfortunately that meant that my fitness level wasn’t quite as high as I wish it would be for the Capital City Classic 10K, but I still ran it any way.

2013-04-06 07.14.51The morning of the race was perfect! In my t-shirt and shorts I was a little cold but I knew once I got going I’d be comfortable.  Unlike last years race, I didn’t have a running buddy to keep me on pace (I missed you Brenda!), so when I got on site, I walked around a little bit and found a few friends of mine, Chris, Rebecca and Adiel.  I figured I’d try to stay with them, but as the race started they all went off with different paces.  Rebecca ended up shooting out in front of the group and I was able to keep her in my sights until a little bit after the first mile.  Then, I was by myself.  Luckily, I had come prepared with my iPod so that I would have something to distract me.

44808_10151392176092817_409068189_nI pushed for the rest of the run, and I really enjoyed it, but in the last 1.5 miles or so, I really started to feel it.  This is when I feel like kicking myself for not really preparing for the race.  I kept pushing and when I got back into Two Rivers Park I was near a lady who is in the Black Girls Run group.  She stayed on my hip for a little bit, but then I noticed her dropping back.  I said, “C’mon girl.” And she sped back up next to me.  We had less than a mile left to go and I liked having her near me because it helped me keep my pace up but then she dropped back again and she was gone.  I could see the finish line at this point, so I focused on that for my final push.  After I crossed the finish line I walked around a little bit and I saw the lady I had encouraged at the end and she said thanks and we exchanged a hug.

I didn’t end up with a PR but I was really close to my pace from last year with a time of 53:00.  It was a beautiful day to run a 10K and I was happy to give a little encouragement to another competitor, so all in all, it was a great day!
